Fabian's work focuses on the development of a bioactive self-regulating non-thrombogenic membrane modification for extracorporeal membrane oxygenators (ECMO). The lack of hemocompatibility of current ECMO membranes and the need of anticoagulation of patients result in serious and potentially life-threatening complications. To overcome this challenge the membrane is engineered to passively prevent thrombus formation by modifying the membrane with polymer brushes.
